First lady Melania Trump on Friday confirmed that she was working with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reunited Ukrainian children with their families amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The first lady confirmed that she and Putin had an "open line of communication" and that several children in Russian custody had been returned to their families in the past day.

President Donald Trump has previously alluded to the first lady's personal investment in the conflict and that she has pushed him to pursue peace in Ukraine, though her own efforts to mitigate the humanitarian issues have remained somewhat private.

The first lady has generally shied away from the spotlight in Trump's second term and Friday's announcement marked one of her few forays into the limelight since the pair returned to the White House.
