U.S. voters are about evenly split on whether the country should prioritize securing the country's border or granting amnesty to illegal immigrants, according to a new Just the News Daily Poll with Scott Rasmussen.

Forty-four percent said securing the U.S. border should take priority, while 46% said legalizing the status of illegal immigrants is the more important policy goal.

The remaining 10% was unsure.

Rasmussen pointed out that the poll results seem to suggest a change of thinking in recent years among Americas on the connected issues.

"Previously, securing the border was routinely seen as the higher priority," he said. "Now they're even. This suggests that the association of President Trump with border security may have pushed some voters away from that perspective."

The survey of 1,200 registered voters was conducted by Rasmussen using a mixed-mode approach from Jan. 21-23, 2021.
