Tim Scott to visit southern border

South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott plans to visit the nation's southern border on Friday and will subsequently meet with local leaders to discuss the drugs, trafficking, and migration issues that pervade the region.

The Biden administration has drawn considerable scrutiny from Republicans over its handling of illegal migration, with some lawmakers floating the idea of impeaching Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The issue was a staple of former President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign for the White House.

Scott, himself a candidate for the Republican Party's 2024 nomination, will appear in Yuma, Ariz., to outline his plans for tackling the border-related issues, The Hill reported.

"If you don’t control your back door at your house, it’s not your house. If you don’t control your southern border, it might not be our country," the South Carolina Republican stated. "That's why on my first day as Commander-in-Chief, the strongest nation on Earth will stop retreating from our own southern border."

Both former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, two of Scott's primary rivals, visited the border earlier this year.

Scott's visit, however, follows a surge in arrests at the border, with authorities catching more than 130,000 individuals in July compared to the roughly 100,000 in June.

As many as 6 million migrants have illegally entered the U.S. since January of 2021, when Biden took office.
