CNN host Jake Tapper received backlash after questioning the patriotism of Rep. Brian Mast, a double amputee Army veteran, following the Florida congressman's objection to the impeachment of President Trump.

"Congressman Brian Mast ... who lost his legs by the way fighting for democracy abroad, although I don't know about his commitment to it here in the United States," Tapper said, according to multiple news reports.

Mast responded to Tapper's comments on Twitter, saying that he fought for the right of both Tapper and the Republicans posing constitutional questions to speak freely.

"I lost two legs for @jaketapper's right to say whatever the hell he wants, but that free speech also protects the Republicans he is so eager to condemn for asking Constitutional questions about the election," Mast wrote.

Tapper responded to Mast by reiterating his appreciation of the armed forces but maintains his criticism of the congressman.

"You're a hero for your service and I'm grateful, as I've said before," Tapper said. "And yes I question the commitment to democracy of anyone who spread election lies, signed onto that deranged TX AG lawsuit, and voted to commit sedition. You were not just asking questions."

Tapper has prided himself on supporting U.S. troops and veterans, but he was met with criticism from others following his remarks.

"Representative Mast, along with myself and many others in Congress and across the country, served in the military so Americans can have freedom of speech, regardless of how repulsive or disgusting it may be," said Arkansas GOP Rep. Rick Crawford, also a veteran.

CNN did not immediately respond to Just the News' request for comment.
