Trump temporarily suspends issuing most green cards

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday announced that he will sign an executive order to temporarily suspend issuing green cards, citing the need to protect American jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The order will only apply for 60 days and to people seeking a green card — not those who enter on a temporary basis for now, said the president. It also reportedly includes major exemptions, including essential workers, like health care workers and nuclear family members.
“As we move forward, we’ll examine what additional immigration related measures should be put in place to protect US workers,” Trump said. “We want to protect our US workers and I think as we move forward, we will become more and more protective of them.”
Earlier drafts of the executive order reportedly would have also suspended the issuance of new visas, however, he reversed the move after hearing from business groups that rely on foreign workers, particularly in the tech sector.
But some Democrats have said that Trump is using the coronavirus pandemic to further long-held anti-immigration policies.
