Burkina Faso soldiers claim old coup leader deposed, new coup leader installed in his place

Lt. Col. who lead earlier insurrection tossed out in favor of new insurgent.

Soldiers in Burkina Faso on Friday said they had thrown out an earlier revolutionary leader in favor of a new president, turning the tides less than a year after earlier major regime change there.

A new vanguard of insurrectionists seized control of state media on Friday and said they had removed Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba from power just nine months after he had come into the presidency of cthe country. 

Damiba himself had seized power in January of this year from then-President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré. Damiba is allegedly being held in a military camp. 

In his place soldiers installed Capt. Ibrahim Traore as the country’s new president.

Damiba himself had appeared at the United Nations only days ago in his capacity as the Burkinabe head of state.
