Researchers have uncovered the remains of an ancient Jewish ritual bath in Jerusalem, one apparently used by the city's elite during the Apostolic Era of the early Christian church.

Archeologists with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem announced the discovery of the "mikveh," a type of water pool used for ritual purification in a tradition that dates back roughly 2,000 years.

The ancient bath was located near the Temple Mount in what the ancient historian Josephus Flavius called the "upper city," according to the Jerusalem Post.

The researchers dated the bath to the Second Temple period, one which ran through 70 A.D., during the earliest years of the Christian church.
