The U.N. Security Council on Monday passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The United States is one of five so-called "permanent" members of the 15-member council. And a "no" vote by any one of five could have blocked the passage of the resolution. However, the U.S. abstaining from voting, so the resolution passed 14-0, according to Axios.

Israel declared war on the Palestinian-affiliated Hamas after Hamas launched a deadly terror attack in October 2023.

The U.S. previously vetoed similar resolutions calling for a ceasefire.
