Hamas on Monday targeted Israel with rocket attacks, including some targeting the nation's capital city of Jerusalem, prompting a retaliatory response from the Jewish State in the Gaza Strip.

"The terrorist organizations in Gaza have crossed a red line and attacked us with missiles in the outskirts of Jerusalem," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, according to the Associated Press. "Whoever attacks us will pay a heavy price,” Netanyahu declared, saying that the fighting could "continue for some time."

The outlet reported that by late Monday the Israeli military had executed airstrikes across the Gaza Strip which the military said had struck a Hamas tunnel, rocket launchers and multiple militants.

The rocket attack targeting Israel came after Israeli police clashed with Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
