The Israeli Defense Forces may have utilized fake reports of ground movements to pull of a major attack against underground tunnels in Gaza, according to media reports.
The Jerusalem Post reported on Friday that, following a Thursday announcement from IDF's Twitter account that Israeli ground forces were moving into Gaza, Hamas sent "their first-line of defense" into a strategic underground tunnel network known as "the Metro" to prepare for troop combat.
Yet the IDF reportedly did not make any ground maneuvers but instead launched a major attack on those underground tunnels, allegedly dropping over 400 bombs on the tunnels and inflicting significant damages on them.
The development "led to speculation that the tweet about the ground incursion was intentional and made to get Hamas to believe it was safe to enter the tunnels," the Post reported.
The fighting in Israel and Gaza has ramped up in recent days as Hamas forces have launched hundreds of rockets at Israel, with Israel deflecting the bombardments using its famed "Iron Dome" interceptor system.
