A former University of California Davis, student has been arrested in connection with three recent stabbings near the campus that resulted in two deaths and kept the community on edge for nearly a week.

The suspect, Carlos Dominguez, 21, was arrested Thursday on two counts of homicide and one count of attempted murder, in connection with all three attacks, Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said during a news conference Thursday.

Dominguez was a third-year student at the university until April 25, when he was "separated for academic reasons," UC Davis said in a news release.

He was taken into custody Wednesday for a weapons violation, possession of a large knife, and arrested Thursday afternoon in connection to the stabbings, said Pytel, according to CNN.

He also said investigators are evaluating whether the knife in Dominguez's backpack was used in all three incidents.

About 15 people called police Wednesday afternoon to report someone matching the suspect description from the third attack near Sycamore Park, where the second stabbing occurred, Pytel said.

One of the callers followed the individual and led police to him, CNN also reports.

The first stabbing occurred April 27 in the city's Central Park. A 50-year-old man was found dead with multiple stab wounds in the park.

Two days later, a University of California, Davis, student was fatally stabbed near Sycamore Park.

The most recent attack was on Monday night, severely injuring a woman sleeping in a homeless encampment.
