The U.S. is experiencing a surge in crime.

After a historic spike in violent crime in 2020, homicides continued to rise last year and into this year, though at a slower rate.

At least 13 cities broke their homicide records in 2021. A record number of police officers were also killed on-duty last year, especially in ambush-style murders. In cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, theft and looting continue to devastate local businesses. And in New York, crime has largely contributed to a massive drop in subway ridership over the last month.
