President Biden on Wednesday called on Congress to suspend federal gasoline and diesel taxes for three months to relieve economic pressure on the American people.

In a speech delivered at the White House, Biden proposed a suspension of the 18.4-cents-a-gallon federal gasoline tax and 24.4-cents-a-gallon diesel tax through September. The move would require new legislation from Congress.

Lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle have questioned the wisdom of suspending the gas tax. Some, including House Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi, have argued the benefits wouldn't necessarily reach consumers. Republicans have pushed instead for more federal support for fossil-fuel production.

Biden's proposal came as the U.S. national average price for a gallon of gas hit $4.96 on Wednesday, according to AAA. Earlier this month, the price reached a record high of just under $5.02.
