Navy warship sidelined because of COVID outbreak among fully immunized crew

A COVID-19 outbreak among the fully immunized crew of the USS Milwaukee forced the Navy warship to delay its deployment to South America over the Christmas weekend.

The US 4th Fleet said the Navy ship will remain docked in port at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba,until the outbreak subsides.

“The crew is 100 percent immunized and all COVID-19 positive Sailors are isolated on board and away from other crew members,” the Navy said. “A portion of those infected have exhibited mild symptoms. The vaccine continues to demonstrate effectiveness against serious illness.”

The outbreak occurred as the omicron variant of COVID-19 starts spreading across the world fast.

Last year, the USS Theodore Roosevelt was sideline for about 10 weeks with the COVID-19 outbreak that second more than 1000 sailors in killed one.
