The Senate is expected to confirm Jay Clayton on Tuesday to be director of National Intelligence. 

The confirmation is expected to fall along party lines following a tense hearing two weeks ago in which he clashed with Democrats over his refusal to say President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, the Associated Press reported. 

Democrats have been more willing to back Clayton than Trump's nominee for the job, Bill Pulte, who lacked Clayton's experience in intelligence. Pulte has been serving in the role on an interim basis since Tulsi Gabbard resigned last month. 

Clayton is the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and a former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman. The Senate voted 41-43 along party lines on Monday to advance his nomination.
