The president told reporters on board Air Force One that Platner is in a "bind" over the situation but that it's really a matter of whether voters believe the accuser.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday night the question regarding the recent accusation that Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner sexually assaulted a woman in 2021, which forced him out of the race, is really about whether people "believe the woman."

Jenny Racicot, 41, detailed the alleged conduct to Politico in an article published Monday, in which she said she maintained an intermittent relationship with Platner but that he arrived at her home one evening in 2021 intoxicated and forced her to have sex with him.

The president told reporters aboard Air Force One that Platner is in a "bind" over the situation and, "It’s really a question of whether you believe the woman. A lot of people say big falsehoods."

The comment came just before Platner suspended his campaign, citing pressure from the party while still denying the allegation.

"I have faced some very serious allegations, and I just want to make it clear, this is all false," he said in a video announcing his decision. "The things that have been claimed did not happen. It's not real."

His campaign had already been beset by allegations of toxic behavior toward other women he dated and a history of sexually explicit texts sent to women early in his marriage.

The Maine Democratic Party now has until July 27 to select his replacement. The new candidate will face incumbent GOP Sen. Susan Collins in November.
