The former gang leader who was convicted earlier this year of orchestrating the 1996 killing of late-iconic rapper Tupac Shakur was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison.

Former Los Angeles gang leader Duane "Keffe D" Davis was convicted of orchestrating the murder in August, but was not accused of pulling the trigger on the gun that killed Shakur in Las Vegas. He is the only person charged in the case.

Judge Carli Kierny said the 40-year sentence comes with a 20-year mandatory enhancement for profiting off the murder.

“You don’t get to take a man from his family,” she told Davis, according to NBC News. “You don’t get to take his very life, his whole life, and just walk away from it, especially when that man is Tupac Shakur.”

Davis declined to address the court regarding his conviction, but Shakur's sister gave a victim statement, pushing for the maximum sentence for Davis.

“He would have been the promise of our parents. I believe when you take away someone like that, you deserve the maximum sentence,” Shakur’s younger sister Sekyiwa Shakur said. “He was a father figure to me. It wasn’t just me, everybody in our immediate family, our extended family, and as we got older, our community as a whole.”

The conviction and sentence comes after Davis published a memoir in 2019 called "Compton Street Legend," which discussed the drive-by shooting and in which he admitted to being in the car during the crime.

Davis is expected to appeal the conviction.
