Two people were arrested and charged in the shooting of a U.S. Park Police officer in Washington, D.C.

Darren Foster, 21, and Asheile Foster, 22, of Southeast, D.C., were arrested on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, FOX 5 DC reported. They were both arrested and charged with Assault on a Federal Police Officer (Gun). If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison.

Police said that two men opened fire around 7:30 p.m. as a USPP officer was driving an unmarked white Tesla on Monday. The officer was participating in an undercover operation connected to an earlier incident on Park Police property.

According to investigators, the suspects approached the vehicle and fired several rounds, striking the officer in the upper body. The officer managed to drive a short distance before stopping, where other police officers provided aid prior to him being flown by helicopter to a hospital.

The Metropolitan Police Department said they have information suggesting the suspects knew the man inside the Tesla was a police officer.

USPP said that the officer has been released from the hospital.
