The Spanish soccer federation on Tuesday fired women's national team coach Jorge Vilda, after his team won the Women's World Cup less than three weeks ago.

He was fired after applauding suspended federation president Luis Rubiales who had refused to resign after being criticized for nonconsensually kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips as Spain celebrated the team's victory in Sydney last month, according to The Associated Press.

FIFA also provisionally suspended Rubiales and is facing an investigation from the Spanish government over his conduct.

Vilda later called Rubiales' behavior improper.
