Watch Live: South Carolina governor announces Lindsey Graham's replacement in the Senate
Republicans are moving quickly to find a temporary replacement for Graham, who died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 71.
South Carolina Republican Gov. Henry McMaster announces Monday afternoon the person who will serve the remainder of the late-Sen. Lindsey Graham's term after the conservative died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 71.
Republicans are moving quickly to find a temporary replacement for Graham, until an election takes place amid their very narrow Senate majority, 53-47.
Graham's death this weekend and Kentucky GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell's medical absence shrinks the Senate Republican Conference, at least temporarily, to 51 members – one more than a simple majority to pass legislation.
The selection will serve only through January, but the Republican Party will have to hold a special primary to determine its candidate to serve the next full term after Graham won his primary for another term earlier this year.
The announcement is expected to take place at 4 p.m. Eastern and can be streamed here.
