The order comes as the College Football Playoffs threaten to encroach on the annual game between the two services, which typically takes place on the second Saturday of December.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that lays the groundwork for him to pull broadcast licenses of outlets that air college football games at the same time as the annual Army-Navy game.

The executive order directs Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to work with the National Collegiate Athletic Association and other agencies to ensure that there is an "exclusive window for the Army-Navy Game, during which no other college football game is broadcast."

The order comes as the College Football Playoffs threaten to encroach on the annual game between the two services, which typically takes place on the second Saturday of December.

"For over a century, the Army-Navy Game, known as 'America's Game,' has stood as a symbol of excellence and the American spirit," Trump said in the executive order. "Such scheduling conflicts weaken the national focus on our Military Service Academies and detract from a morale-building event of vital interest to the Department of War."

Carr said he will work with Lutnick to enforce the order, which Trump acknowledged Friday could still face court challenges.

“America’s Game stands as a symbol of excellence and our great national spirit,” Carr said in a statement. “It is important that we continue to reserve a window of time on the second Saturday in December exclusively for this important event.”

Trump signed the executive order during a ceremony at the White House where he presented the United States Naval Academy with a trophy for winning the annual game last year.
