New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul indicated Wednesday that her party could have a strong presidential candidate in 2028 thanks to a "deep bench" of governors that are currently leading their states.

Hochul singled out potential candidates, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has already signaled plans to run for higher office once his term ends in November. She also highlighted Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore as possible contenders for 2028.

“We are so damn lucky,” Hochul told Politico at its Albany Summit. “We have the deepest bench I’ve seen in years of highly qualified individuals that have been battle tested. Maybe I have a bias toward governors but they’re all my friends.”

The governor did not seem enthusiastic about former Vice President Kamala Harris running in 2028, stating she could do "whatever she wants to," but indicated governors are in good positions to run the nation.

“They understand that it’s just about getting results, not about introducing bills in Congress and having hearings and all,” Hochul said. “I was there, that’s very important what they do.”

Hochul did not comment on her own plans for 2028.
