National Geographic lays off its last staff writers in latest effort to cut costs

National Geographic’s last remaining staff writers, along with several editors and the entire podcast staff, were laid off this week in the iconic magazine’s latest round of company layoffs initiated by parent company Disney. Most of the reporting going forward will be done by freelance writers or in-house editors. National Geographic plans to shift their focus to digital products and readers who want a physical copy of the yellow-bordered magazine will need a subscription starting next year.
