CBS correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi said in an interview published Wednesday that the network declined to renew her contract, after she clashed with it over its decision to pull her segment on Trump administration deportations late last year.

The "60 Minutes" story centered on illegal migrants who were deported from the U.S. to El Salvador’s notoriously harsh CECOT prison.

CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss had ordered the network to hold the story because she did not think it sufficiently reflected the administration’s viewpoint or advance reporting that had been done earlier by other news organizations.

Alfonsi's contract expired Saturday, but the journalist said she is still employed at CBS and that they will have to fire her in order for her to leave the network. She also claimed her agent's attempts to secure a deal for her at CBS were met with silence.

“It sends a chilling message to the entire newsroom,” Alfonsi told the New York Times. “I think it was a deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize accurate reporting.”

The "60 Minutes" segment eventually aired in its entirety in January and included statements from the White House and Department of Homeland Security that were not part of what Alfonsi had used before her story was pulled. It did not feature on-camera interviews with Trump administration officials.

CBS has not commented on its decision not to renew Alfonsi's contract.
