CNN founder and philanthropist Ted Turner died Wednesday at the age of 87-years-old, according to the cable TV news outlet.

Details on the media titan's death were not immediately clear, but just a month before his 80th birthday, he was diagnosed with the progressive brain disorder Lewy body dementia.

“Ted was an intensely involved and committed leader, intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement,” said Mark Thompson, chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide. “He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN. Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world.”

CNN reports that it received word of Turner's death from Turner Enterprises.

He is survived by his five children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
