A letter circulating online claiming former President Jimmy Carter is dead is a fake, the Carter Center confirmed Tuesday.

The clarification followed journalists and elected officials sharing the letter on social media claiming Carter died, though the former president had not passed, according to KOMO News.

The social media platform, X, has since put up disclaimers indicating that the letter is illegitimate, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

In February of 2023, Carter entered Hospice Care. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in November of 2023.

Outlets such as  4KXLF have made corrections to stories regarding Carter.

The former president is set to turn 100 years old in October.

In June, his grandson Jason Carter told CNN that his grandfather was "coming to the end of his life."
