NBC journalist incorrectly said Harris was at dignified transfer ceremony for fallen 13 soldiers

NBC News journalist Kristen Welker wrongly stated Sunday that Vice President Kamala Harris was present at the dignified transfer of the 13 U.S. troops that were killed during the Afghanistan withdrawal. 

Welker was interviewing Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., on NBC's Meet the Press, during which he criticized Harris and President Joe Biden for not doing enough for the families of the 13 soldiers who died during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. 

"Joe Biden and Kamala Harris — where were they?" Cotton said during the interview, according to Fox News. "Joe Biden was sitting at a beach. Kamala Harris was sitting at her mansion in Washington, D.C. She was four miles away — ten minutes. She could've gone to the cemetery and honored the sacrifice of those young men and women, but she hasn't."

"They did meet them during the dignified transfer," Welker said as she interrupted Cotton's statement.  "They were with them at the dignified transfer." 

It has been confirmed that Harris was not present at the dignified transfer. NBC News issued a correction on the social media platform, X.

"On our broadcast this morning, we incorrectly implied that both President Biden and Vice President Harris attended the dignified transfer of 13 American service members killed during the Afghanistan withdrawal. Biden was in attendance but Harris was not," Meet the Press wrote on social media.

While Welker's statement that "They," meaning Biden and Harris, met the families and were with them at the event was presumably a mistake on her part rather than a lie, the same can't be said for the correction. She didn't imply that they were both there, she said it directly. 

Users on X pointed out that the Meet the Press correction needs a correction of its own.
