The seat will remain open until someone is elected and will trim the House Republican majority. The GOP currently holds 220 seats to the Democrats' 213 seats with two vacancies, according to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Both races were triggered after Del. Mike Jones resigned his House seat to run for the Senate.
Hardman, a member of the West Des Moines City Council, won the left-leaning suburban seat, which was left vacant in October after its incumbent, who was also a Democrat, died from an illness.
Virginia House Speaker Don Scott formally called the election after Sickles stepped down to join Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger’s incoming administration. Scott issued the notice on Dec. 24, setting the election process in motion.
