Four Supreme Court Justices were not present for President Biden's State of the Union

Four out of the nine Supreme Court Justices were not present for President Joe Biden's 2023 State of the Union address. 

Clarence Thomas, Sam Alito, Sonia Sotomayor and Neil Gorsuch were not in attendance, while the other five justices, John Roberts, Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson were there. 

The president had a brief moment with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. Jackson is the only justice that Biden has named to the Supreme Court. 

"The story of America is a story of progress and resilience," Biden stated in his address. "Of always moving forward. Of never giving up. A story that is unique among all nations. We are the only country that has emerged from every crisis stronger than when we entered it. That is what we are doing again."
