AOC calls for New York City mayor to resign amid flood of resignations in his administration

New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday called for New York City Mayor Eric Adams to resign after a series of resignations rocked his administration.

Three officials within Adams' administration have resigned so far, amid a handful of investigations into Adams and senior members of his staff. New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks was the latest to resign over a federal bribery probe on Tuesday, and the city's police commissioner and top lawyer have already resigned.

Ocasio-Cortez claimed that she could not imagine Adams being an effective mayor because of the investigations and urged him to step down for the "good of the city."

"I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City. The flood of resignations and vacancies are threatening gov function," the congresswoman posted to X. "Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration."

The New Yorker's condemnation of the mayor is unexpected because she does not usually involve herself in city politics, however she has previously slammed Adams over his handling of the migrant crisis. Ocasio-Cortez represents parts of Queens and the Bronx.

Adams has rejected calls to resign so far, claiming that he nor his closest advisors have been charged with any wrongdoing yet.  But he also tried to downplay the departures, claiming that the public resignations were not as sudden as they appeared.

“We are constantly bringing in new people,” Adams told reporters on Tuesday, according to the New York Times. “So let’s not give the image that all of a sudden, there are people saying, ‘Hey, I don’t want to be in city government.’”

The federal investigation into Adams focuses on allegations that he accepted illegal campaign donations from the Turkish government. The FBI has also expanded its investigation to include five other countries, but the details and names of those countries have not been released so far.
