Bill to deport welfare fraudsters passes in the House, but with nearly 200 Democrats opposing it

Dems who opposed the bill said it wasn’t necessary because noncitizens convicted of fraud are already eligible for deportation. "Another week, another redundant and completely unnecessary immigration crime bill," said Rep. Jamie Raskin.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed legislation intended to crack down on illegal migrants who engage in welfare fraud, by a vote of 231-186.

The Deporting Fraudsters Act, sponsored by Rep. David Taylor, R-Ohio, would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to explicitly make fraud a deportable offense, according to Fox News

Republicans said it is necessary to ensure that noncitizens who engage in such fraud are not eligible for immigration relief services or legal protections.

"If you admit to or you’re convicted of fraudulently receiving public benefits, you are out of here on the next plane and can never return," said Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif.

Democrats who opposed the legislation said it wasn’t necessary because noncitizens convicted of fraud are already eligible for deportation.

"Another week, another redundant and completely unnecessary immigration crime bill," Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said during debate on the measure.

The bill is expected to die in the Senate based on the widespread opposition from Democrats and the 60-vote threshold required to advance the vote to final passage.
