Comer demands pro-Palestine group produce documents related to allegedly funding illegal protests
Comer said he was notified on June 11 that the organization did not plan to produce any of the documents or communications the committee had requested.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer pushed a pro-Palestine group on Monday to turn over documents about allegedly funding illegal protests and pro-Hamas propaganda.
The request is part of Comer's larger probe into groups that funded the illegal encampments on college campuses earlier this year, where thousands of students and demonstrators shut down the campuses to protest their schools' ties to Israel.
Comer sent a letter to the American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) organization, requesting that the group cooperate with congressional oversight and avoid further delays on the matter. Comer initially requested the documents and communications related to their funding of the protests on May 29.
"This oversight is critical to inform legislation to ensure that federal agencies are able to adequately prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, as well as to determine whether statutory reporting requirements on financial institutions related to money laundering and terrorist financing need to be updated by Congress," Comer wrote in the letter.
Comer said he was notified on June 11 that the organization did not plan to accept the letter, and would therefore not produce any of the documents or communications the committee had requested.
“If AMP continues to fail to produce the requested documents, I will consider other measures, including the use of compulsory process, to gain compliance and obtain this material," Comer wrote. "Any knowing and willful false statements or representations made to the Committee in conjunction with this or any other investigation conducted pursuant to the authority of this Committee could constitute criminal acts and will not be tolerated."
Comer also noted in a press release on Monday that there was "substantial evidence" that tied the group to the National Students for Justice in Palestine, an organization which supports hundreds of “Palestine solidarity organizations.”
