Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez says he will resign after being convicted of bribery: report
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. urged Menendez to resign.
New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez has reportedly told allies that he will be resigning from Congress following a conviction on federal corruption charges.
Two sources told NBC News about the conversation, following pressure for him to resign and if he didn't, there would be increased threats to expel him.
Senate Democrats have called on the senator to resign as earlier this week, he was found guilty on all counts in his corruption case, including conspiracy to commit bribery and honest services wire fraud.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. urged Menendez to resign.
“In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” he said in a statement following the conviction.
Both Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were charged last year with conspiracy to commit bribery and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, according to the indictment.
