Dr. Wladimir Lorentz, who is accused of delivering 2,000 babies to immigrant mothers, invoked the Fifth Amendment in response to every question during his appearance before the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday.

Lorentz is the founder and Chief Medical Officer at Have My Baby in Miami, a South Florida business that’s aimed at helping immigrant mothers give birth in the United States — what's often referred to as birth tourism.

Lorentz had initially refused to appear voluntarily, stating his attorney advised him not speak with the committee due to a pending criminal probe being conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, WFMD reported. Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., subpoenaed him earlier this month.

“As the Founder and Chief Medical Officer of a company doing business as ‘Have My Baby in Miami,’ your knowledge regarding the company’s marketing practices and direct observations relevant to the birth tourism industry is vital to the immediate investigation,” Comer’s subpoena letter read.

Steven Camota, who testified at the hearing, explained that the goal of immigrants who come to the U.S. to give birth to their children is so they can be granted citizenship and then, in turn, sponsor their parents and other family members to immigrate to the U.S. when those children grow up.
