Elon Musk follows Trump in endorsing Mike Johnson for speaker amid backlash

Tesla CEO and President-elect Donald Trump's ally Elon Musk on Monday followed the former president in endorsing House Speaker Mike Johnson for reelection, despite conservative backlash.

Trump endorsed Johnson earlier Monday, stating that Americans need "immediate relief" from the chaos of President Joe Biden's policies, and that he knows Johnson would work hard to get the necessary legislation passed.

Musk said that he agrees with Trump's take on the speaker, who has faced backlash after he helped present a massive government spending bill despite conservative calls to slash federal spending.

"I feel the same way!" Musk wrote in a post on his social media company X.  "You have my full support."

The comment was in response to Johnson's social media post that thanked Trump for the support. Johnson has also promised to help pass Trump's conservative agenda. 

"Thank you, President Trump! I’m honored and humbled by your support, as always," Johnson wrote on X. "Together, we will quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America. The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time. Let’s get to work!"

The endorsements come ahead of Friday's House vote on the chamber's next leader. Several Republicans have stated that they are not sure who they would support in Johnson's bid for the gavel, and others have indicated Trump's support for Johnson could sway those on the fence. But Johnson can only afford to lose a handful of votes because of the GOP's small majority in the lower chamber.
