Congresswomen Greene, Ocasio-Cortez trade insults at Garland contempt hearing, 'Baby girl'
Greene also hurled an insulted at Texas Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crocket, saying, "I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading."
GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene traded insults Thursday with fellow Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jasmine Crocket at a House hearing regarding a contempt resolution for Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The verbal feud appeared to start when Greene asked the Democrats in the hearing room whether any of them had hired the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over former President Donald Trump's hush money trial in New York.
The daughter, Loren Merchan, previously worked at a progressive consulting firm and has represented Democratic-aligned groups. With Trump under a gag order, his Capitol Hill allies have hammered away at the matter outside the Manhattan courthouse.
Crockett, of Texas, replied: “Do you know what we’re here for?”
Greene responded: “I don’t think you know what you’re here for." She also said to Crockett: "I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”
Ocasio-Cortez jumped in, saying, “That is absolutely unacceptable. How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person."
She attempted to strike Greene's words from record.
“Are your feelings hurt?” Greene asked Ocasio-Cortez, of New York.
Ocasio-Cortez replied: “Oh, girl. Baby girl. Don’t even play."
Greene shot back: “Baby girl? I don’t think so.”
Greene eventually said she would strike her words but not apologize for what she said.
This prompted Ocasio-Cortez to motion again to take down Greene's comments.
In response, Greene said, “Why don’t you debate me?”
Ocasio-Cortez replied: “I think it’s pretty self-evident.”
Greene responded, saying, "Yeah, you don’t have enough intelligence."
