Wisconsin GOP Rep. Glenn Grothman on Friday praised President Donald Trump for ensuring special needs and disabled adults can continue work at certain work centers, which used to be called "sheltered workshops."

The congressman claimed people on the left have tried to shut down the places because they pay the workers less than minimum wage. However, the disabled adults are frequently given some other form of government assistance, he said.

Grothman said there are adults in his area who work at the centers who are proud of the work they do, and the community they get to be a part of.

The workers often have disabilities like spina bifida, and down syndrome, which can make it difficult or impossible to hold other jobs.

"If you tour one of these places, and they're all over the United States, the people working them are so happy and so proud they can work just like everybody else," the congressman said on the "Just The News, No Noise" TV show. "Maybe their paycheck will be a $5-an-hour paycheck, but they usually get some other governmental assistance too, so they have the pride of, you know, buying their parents a gift, buying their own clothes, that sort of thing."

Grothman claimed that former President Joe Biden was preparing to shut down the centers, because of the low wages, but that Trump has ended the effort.

"The sheltered workshops for people with handicaps, where they can earn money, have the social life of getting to know the other people working there, establish friendships outside of their their family. That's going to continue, and we all owe, particularly if we know people in the handicap community, we all owe President Trump a debt of gratitude for not continuing down the path of trying to close these special little packaging places."
