The House of Representatives confirmed Tuesday afternoon that California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell has officially resigned his post and that Texas GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales' resignation will take effect at midnight.

Both men announced they would be resigning from the lower chamber on Monday after facing sexual misconduct allegations.

“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past," Swalwell said Monday. "I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make."

Swalwell's resignation went into effect at 2 p.m. Eastern, according to the House Press Gallery.

The Democrat's resignation means there are currently 431 lawmakers in the lower chamber, consisting of 217 Republicans, 213 Democrats and one independent. There are also four vacancies.
