House GOP members to send impeachment charges to Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas in April
Mayorkas is being accused by House GOP members of “high crimes and misdemeanors."
House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans informed Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Thursday that two impeachment charges will be sent to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on April 10.
Mayorkas is being accused by House GOP members of “high crimes and misdemeanors."
The Senate will now take up the issue and decide if there should be a trial held on the floor, whether or not the matter should go to another committee or vote to dismiss the charges, according to The Hill.
Johnson urged Schumer in a letter to schedule a trial for the impeachment.
“The evidence on both charges is clear, comprehensive, and compelling, and the House’s solemn act to impeach the first sitting Cabinet official in American history demands timely action by the Senate,” the letter reads.
Other Republicans that signed the letter included House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas).
Last month, the House voted to impeach Mayorkas 214 to 213.
As of now, it is unclear what Schumer will do about the charges against Mayorkas but has in the past criticized House GOP efforts to impeach him.
“House Republicans failed to produce any evidence that Secretary Mayorkas has committed any crime,” he had said shortly after the House impeachment.
