House Oversight launches probe into Kamala Harris's role in border crisis
House Oversight Chairman James Comer sent a letter to acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Troy Miller as part of the probe, requesting documents and internal communications related to Harris's role in what he calls the country's "worst border crisis."
Republicans on the House Oversight and Accountability committee on Tuesday launched a probe into Vice President Kamala Harris's role in the border crisis.
Harris, who is the Democratic nominee for president this November, was anointed the "border czar" for the Biden administration, but has been criticized by Republicans for not making a dent in the ongoing immigration crisis at the country's southern border. But the Biden administration argued that her role was to address the root cause of the migration surge, not fixing the border.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer sent a letter to acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Troy Miller as part of the probe, requesting documents and internal communications related to Harris's role in what he calls the country's "worst border crisis."
"The mass illegal migration under the Biden-Harris Administration has contributed to murders, sexual assaults, and serious bodily injuries committed against numerous Americans at the hands of illegal aliens," Comer wrote. "The Committee seeks to understand whether Vice President Harris has ‘done anything’ to address the worst border crisis in American history."
The Biden administration claimed that Harris's role was to focus on climate change, poverty and violence, which they believe contributed to the unprecedented surge in illegal immigration. Under the Biden administration, millions of asylum seekers have illegally entered the country, which Republicans have blasted as a national security threat because of a lack in vetting.
Comer noted that Harris' alleged failures on the border and immigration predates her tenure as the vice president. Harris previously called for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to be reworked in 2018, and compared the Trump administration's tactics on the border to the Ku Klux Klan.
The border crisis is considered one of the top issues for voters this election cycle, and is one of the strongest areas for Republican candidates.
"Vice President Harris’s root causes approach to solving the border crisis has been an abject failure as encounters at the southwest border remain high," Comer noted in the letter. "It is unclear what actions, if any, Vice President Harris has taken to fix the border crisis. Rather, she has claimed that '[w]e have a secure border in that that is a priority for any nation, including our administration.'"
