House speaker slams Democrats' creation of legislation in response to Supreme Court's Trump ruling
"Democrats need to get a grip," a spokesperson for Johnson said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson's spokesperson slammed Democrats after Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said he would work on legislation to disqualify a candidate under the 14th Amendment in response to the Supreme Court's decision that keeps former President Donald Trump on the 2024 presidential ballot.
Raskin, who led the second impeachment effort against Trump, said Monday that he is working on legislation that would "set up a process by which we could determine that someone who committed insurrection is disqualified by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment," which is known as the "insurrection clause."
The Supreme Court unanimously ruled Monday that Trump could remain on the ballot after Colorado and several other states attempted to disqualify him over the clause due to his alleged efforts to alter the 2020 election results and his actions in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
The Supreme Court wrote in its decision that "the text of the Fourteenth Amendment, on its face, does not affirmatively delegate such a power to the States," and that the "Constitution makes Congress, rather than the States, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates."
Johnson's spokesperson responded to Raskin's efforts on Monday in a statement to Fox News Digital.
"Democrats need to get a grip. In this country, the American people decide the next president—not the courts and not the Congress," the spokesperson said.
