House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Wednesday that he would support articles of impeachment against two federal judges who have recently drawn the ire of conservative lawmakers, including U.S. District Judge James Boasberg.

Republican lawmakers have rebuked Boasberg, who has been at the center of several recent high-profile cases, and U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman, who gave a lenient sentence to Nicholas Roske last year, who plotted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Johnson emphasized that he was not in favor of impeaching people lightly, but admitted that some judges have committed "egregious abuses," according to The Hill

“I’m for it,” Johnson told reporters at a press conference. “Judge Boasberg is one who’s been mentioned ... Impeachment, as we have discussed altogether many times, is an extreme measure. But extreme times call for extreme measures.

"I think some of these judges have gotten so far outside the bounds of where they’re supposed to operate, it would not be, in my view, a bad thing for Congress to lay down law, so to speak, and, you know, to make an example of some of these egregious abuses,” he added.

Texas GOP Rep. Brandon Gill filed articles of impeachment against Boasberg in November, accusing the judge of weaponizing the judiciary branch against people who criticized the Biden administration, including those who criticized the Arctic Frost probe.

Boasberg had ordered AT&T and Verizon not to notify lawmakers of subpoenas for their phone records as part of former special counsel Jack Smith's Arctic Frost investigation. The nondisclosure orders were in effect for a year.

Johnson declined to commit to bringing the articles of impeachment up for a floor vote.
