Lindsey Graham warns Amazon that he won't let Alexa political bias error 'go unaddressed'
Amazon admitted Tuesday that an error with Alexa made it provide fundamentally different answers on why a user should vote for Vice President Kamala Harris versus former President Donald Trump. The error has since been fixed.
Senate Judiciary Ranking Member Lindsey Graham on Wednesday warned Amazon that its virtual assistant Alexa's perceived political bias will not go unaddressed, after it appeared to favor Democrats.
Amazon admitted Tuesday that an error with Alexa made it provide fundamentally different answers on why a user should vote for Vice President Kamala Harris versus former President Donald Trump. The error has since been fixed.
"While there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most significant may be that she is a female of color with a comprehensive plan to address racial injustice and inequality throughout the country," the voice service previously said when asked why someone should vote for Harris.
When asked why someone should vote for Trump, Alexa responded that it cannot endorse a specific political candidate.
Graham sent a letter to Amazon CEO Andrew Jassy, telling the CEO that he was being "put ... on notice" because Graham would not let the "shocking" incident go unaddressed, Fox News reported.
"The radically different responses suggest that Amazon technology is interfering in the election in favor of one political candidate," Graham wrote. "There’s a widespread belief among conservatives that companies like yours have a distinct bias in favor of liberal causes. These shocking interactions with Alexa are Exhibit A of the problem."
Graham said he expects Jassy to provide a "prompt" reply on the error that occurred, and what Amazon will do to ensure it does not happen again.
