Marjorie Taylor Greene moves to have Antifa declared domestic terrorist organization
Greene said Antifa was responsible for "domestic terrorism" in her home state of Georgia.
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is trying to get Antifa classified as a domestic terror group, amid violent demonstrations in Atlanta in which members of the left-wing group allegedly have attacked police officers and destroyed construction equipment at the site of a future public-safety training facility.
"Antifa are domestic terrorists and I'm introducing my resolution to officially declare them a terrorist organization on Tuesday," the Republican congresswoman tweeted Sunday. "Antifa attacked the Atlanta future Public Safety Training Facility. This is domestic terrorism. It was planned for weeks and announced on social media.
"Antifa are self proclaimed communists and consistently organize to attack our government over and over again. They should be taken seriously and not tolerated anymore."
The Atlanta Police Department on Sunday said 35 people are in custody after anti-police demonstrators "changed into black clothing and entered the construction area and began to throw large rocks, bricks, Molotov cocktails, and fireworks at police officers."
Group members notoriously dress in black clothing that covers their face.
Former President Donald Trump in 2020 called for Antifa to be designated as a terrorist organization after violent riots broke out across the U.S. following the Black Lives Matter-related unrest that summer.
"As required by the National Defense Authorization Act, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, in consultation with the director of National Intelligence, have developed standard definitions of terminology related to domestic terrorism and uniform methodologies for tracking domestic terrorism incidents," the FBI states on its website.
