Marjorie Taylor Greene calls for new Jan. 6 Committee to investigate Dem panel

Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to create a new House Jan. 6 Select Committee to investigate the actions of the panel's original iteration.

Johnson last week announced that House Republicans planned to post more than 40,000 hours of Capitol Hill security footage online for public viewing, holding back only a small fraction that contained sensitive security information.

"When I ran for Speaker, I promised to make accessible to the American people the 44,000 hours of video from Capitol Hill security taken on January 6, 2021," he said at the time. "Truth and transparency are critical." The release of the tapes was hailed by Johnson's supporters, but failed to quell Greene's desires for greater transparency on the issue.

"I’m calling on [Mike Johnson] to create a January 6th Select Committee. Releasing the tapes is not enough! There needs to be investigations and ACCOUNTABILITY for ALL of the lies, deceit, and lives ruined," Greene posted on X. "Every member of the Jan 6th committee, Nancy Pelosi, FBI, DOJ, DC Police, Cap Police, Jan 6 witnesses who lied, all need to be subpoenaed. Criminal referrals must be written and prosecutions MUST happen under a Trump DOJ. I’ve said it all along, MAGA did not do this."

The original Jan. 6 panel earned derision from Republicans, who labeled the body and its investigation a partisan farce. Republican participants included former Reps. Liz Cheney, Wyo.; and Adam Kinzinger, Ill.; both of whom previously voted to impeach former President Donald Trump over the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

The panel was heavily critical of Trump and largely painted the affair as an active and coordinated attempt at an insurrection to keep Trump in power.
