NY Rep. doubts caucus will settle on a speaker until emotions of McCarthy's ouster are worked out

"I think it's very foolish to take it to the floor for a vote without knowing you have 217," Rep. Mike Lawler said.

New York GOP Rep. Mike Lawler said that he doubts that the House Caucus will be able to settle on a House Speaker until the emotions of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy's removal as speaker are dealt with.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise defeated fellow GOP Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Oh.) on Wednesday in the speaker election before the House GOP conference, following the House vote to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from the speakership post in a 113-99 vote.

As of now, it is still unclear when the House floor vote for speaker will take place. Scalise needs to win 217 votes to become speaker.

"People are very angry and frustrated at what happened last week," Lawler said on the "John Solomon Reports" podcast, referencing McCarthy's being ousted. And unless it's really, truly dealt with, I don't see how you get to 217."

He said that he believes that the ouster should not have happened.

"We had eight people team up with 208 Democrats to remove a duly-elected Republican Speaker," he said. "It never should have happened. I think if there's no consequence to that, if there's no ramifications of it, then, it makes it hard to operate as a conference."

McCarthy was ousted by eight Republicans last week. Many of them initially opposed McCarthy's speakership, and cited recent budget negotiations as the reason for ousting him.

"We're gonna see how this plays out," Lawler said. "But I think it's very foolish to take it to the floor for a vote without knowing you have 217."
