Over 150 Democrats opposed bill to deport illegals who commit sex crimes
The legislation passed Wednesday 266-158 with seven individuals not voting.
A total of 158 House Democrats voted against South Carolina GOP Rep. Nancy Mace's legislation that would have ensured illegal migrants who have committed sex crimes would face deportation.
The bill is titled H.R. 7909, also called the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act.
The legislation passed Wednesday 266-158 with seven lawmakers not voting.
"If you vote against it, you're sexist against women," Mace said during a Fox News interview prior to the vote.
"I mean, truly, because we're talking about illegals who are here who are committing domestic violence, rape and murder on women and children – they’ve gotta go. They shouldn't be allowed into our country," she continued.
Some Democrats who voted against the legislation argued it was a bill that promoted fear mongering and didn't address issues about the immigration system.
"Here we are again, debating another partisan bill that fear mongers about immigrants, instead of working together to fix the immigration system," Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., said during the debate on the bill before it was voted on.
