Democrats, Republicans on House oversight issue joint statement on Secret Service director testimony
The moment on unity comes before Secret Service Direct Kimberly Cheatle is set to testify on Monday.
The lead Republican and Democrat on the House Oversight Committee issued a joint statement Friday on their investigation into the assassination attempt against GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump – reiterating that the Secret Service director "must appear" before their committee for testimony next week.
The moment of unity comes before Secret Service Direct Kimberly Cheatle is set to testify Monday.
"Americans have many serious questions about the historic security failures that occurred at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania," Chairman Rep. James Comer and top panel Democrat Jamie Raskin said in a statement. "Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle must appear before the House Oversight Committee without delay on Monday, July 22 to answer our many questions and provide the transparency and accountability that Americans deserve and that are at the foundation of our government."
On Wednesday, the committee issued a subpoena for Cheatle to appear, after the Department of Homeland Security appeared to cause a delay in the planned House-wide briefing from the Secret Service about the incident at Trump's rally.
The committee also requested documents, records, and information from the Secret Service surrounding its planning and execution of its security operations at the rally.
