Matt Gaetz introduces bill to bar states from sentencing presidential candidates in election season
Gaetz said that Trump should be allowed to campaign freely without any interference from outside parties.
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., introduced legislation Thursday aimed at blocking state officials and bureaucrats from intervening in elections through politicized prosecutions and sentencings.
The Prevention of Election Interference Act of 2024 would bar the sentencing of presidential candidates in court 120 days before a presidential election. It also would prevent the candidate from being sentenced 60 days after a presidential election.
"Presidential candidates should have the right to campaign without interference, regardless of their party affiliation!" Gaetz said in a statement to Breitbart News. "Over the past two years, state officials and unelected bureaucrats have been keeping President Trump tied up in court with dubious charges, hindering his ability to campaign nationwide."
He added that Trump should be allowed to campaign freely without any interference from outside parties.
GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has faced a litany of court cases amid his 2024 run, which he has deemed part of a politicized effort to interfere in his campaign.
