Republican senators call for Kristi Noem to resign as DHS Secretary amid tensions in Minnesota

The comments also come after multiple news outlets reported that Noem met with Trump for two hours on Monday night, which occurred at her request, and Trump has since denied calls to fire the secretary.

Two Republican senators on Tuesday urged Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign her post in light of recent shootings in Minneapolis where two people were killed by federal immigration officers.

The Department of Homeland Security has defended the shootings in both cases, claiming that the officers were firing defensive shots because they were concerned about their safety. The most recent shooting took place over the weekend.

North Carolina GOP Sen. Thom Tillis told reporters that he does not have confidence in Noem, stating that her actions in response to the shootings have reflected "amateurish assistant-manager-sort of thought processes" that is "unacceptable" for a Cabinet member.

"I think she should go," Tillis said, according to NBC News. "If I were in her position, I can't think of any point of pride over the last year."

Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski also said Noem should not be running the department.

"Yes, she should go,” Murkowski told the outlet.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune declined to state whether he had confidence in Noem but also refused to push her to resign, stating that the secretary's role was up to President Donald Trump's judgment, according to Politico.

The comments also come after multiple news outlets reported that Noem met with Trump for two hours on Monday night, which occurred at her request, and Trump has since denied calls to fire the secretary.

“I think she’s doing a very good job," Trump said. "The border is totally secure. You know, you forget we had a border that I inherited where millions of people were coming through. Now we have a border where no one is coming through. They come into our country only legally."
